In the Company of Wolves: Thinning the Herd
James Michael Larranaga
In the Company of Wolves is a novel about Quin Lighthorn who is obsessed with wolves and has been sent undercover at Safe Haven, a company that buys out life insurance policies from the terminally ill. When the insured dies, the company gets the policy. On his first day of work Lighthorn witnesses a client being shot to death. On the surface it looks like a Deputy Sheriff over reacting to a gun, but Quin is sure there is more to it than that. So are the people who hired him to go undercover.
I really wanted to like this book. I like wolves, I like thrillers, what’s not to like about a book that is a thriller about a human wolf pack? Unfortunately after several attempts I was just unable to get engaged in the book. There are similarities between wolf and human communities, but this book, or at least its hero seem to make a one to one correlation. I also found that the people involved in the plot were revealed much too early. Any suspense about the plot is quickly negated.
While it isn’t horrible, it is also not a book that I was unable to put down.
